Über die Universität:
The Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) is a public higher education institution located in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro (state). The university has academic campuses in other cities inside the Rio de Janeiro state, being the most internalized Federal University in the country. It is considered one of the main centers of excellence in Brazil. There is a large number of national and international research programmes. The Department of Tourism belongs to the Top 10 in Brazil. I accually studied at the Rio de Janeiro campus of the UFF.
More than 66,000 students are registered at the UFF in one of the many courses that are offered on undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. Languages of instruction are both English and Portuguese. You will find there 29 libraries, 473 laboratories, 19 auditoriums, one Arts Center, a hospital, an experimental school farm in the Waterfalls of Paraná and much more.
Betreuung vor Ort:
From my first contact with the UFF staff members, I felt like at home. All people working at the International Office are very friendly and hospitable. Everyone spoke English or Spanish with me. They organized a very warm-welcome for all the new exchange students and explained every detail about the enrollment of the courses that we were going to take. Unfortunately, three of the courses I had selected took place atfor changes in my Learning Agreement, but that could be settled with the help of the IO at the THD.
The teachers are very friendly and they are always available for the students. And the best picnis and trips are with them!
I booked a double room in a student residential by myself in the Facebook Group Repubicas in Rio de Janeiro. It was very nice to live with more Brazilian girls because I could improve my Portuguese in a very fast way and I could appreciate the real Brazilian culture and the charm of the people.
Tipps:
You will love Brazil...
First of all, you will need to apply with anticipation because the UFF is not a partner university of the THD, so you will need to do it as a free mover, and that needs a little bit more effort. Because of the many campuses of the UFF, they will inform you on which campus you are supposed to study. Then you can choose a suitable "Republica" near to your campus. Btw, Rio de Janeiro rooms are more cheaper than Nitéroi rooms.
Please notice that the city of Rio de Janeiro is having many financial troubles right now, you will be find everything very expensive, also food and clothes. So please be ready to calculate your expenses and save some money for travelling.
If you want to enjoy 100% you stay in Rio, I recommend to go there during a German winter semester because after the exams you can participate of the Carnavales and have the best summer.
I recommend indeed to take some Portuguese lessons before coming to Rio because not everybody can speak English outside the university.
And the most important: Please be careful always with your belongings and avoid problems going around very late.
As the cariocas say: Rio de Janeiro is not suitable for beginners :)
